Viajar por Marruecos con niños: lo que funciona

De niños pequeños a adolescentes, lo que aprendimos en quince años organizando viajes en familia. Dónde alojarte, qué evitar, y la pregunta del camello.

Morocco is one of the most family-friendly destinations in this part of the world. Children get attention everywhere — Moroccans love kids and tell you so loudly — and the country is set up for big extended families travelling together.

Riad with a pool, not just a riad. Pools rescue every afternoon. The medina is intense in the morning and evening; midday is for the pool. Most riads we use have one — ask us at booking.

Skip Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fnaa with toddlers. The fire-eaters and the snake charmers are wonderful and we love the square at night, but it's overwhelming for under-fives. Older kids (8+) usually love it. For toddlers, the Majorelle Garden, the Menara Gardens, and the koutoubia tower at sunset are better.

The camel ride. Children from age 3 can ride happily, usually sharing a saddle with a parent. Younger kids can take the 4x4 to the desert camp instead. Older kids (10+) usually prefer their own camel.

Food. Tagines are universally child-friendly: chicken with olives and lemon, lamb with prunes, kefta meatballs in tomato sauce. Rice is available at most tourist-zone restaurants. Bread is excellent everywhere. Fresh-squeezed orange juice is in every café for around 10 dirhams.

Health. Only adults should drink the tap water; bottled or filtered for kids. Bring child-strength imodium and rehydration sachets just in case. Sunscreen aggressively.

Pace. Half what you'd do as adults. We've learned the hard way that families do best with one main activity per day, lunch, a long pool break, then a small late-afternoon outing.
